A Rising Star in Chambolle: Benjamin Roblot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuees and Les Groseilles 2017
A relatively young but considered a rising star in Chambolle-Musigny, Domaine Benjamin Roblot was set up by Benjamin in 2016 after taking over the family vineyards. They own top vineyards in the village of Chambolle and beyond, but before Benjamin took over, all the vineyards were either leased to other growers or the grapes were sold to negociants.
Apart from holdings of the Grand Cru Bonnes-Mares, the super Premier Cru Les Amoureuses, and two more Premier Cru in Chambolle: Les Fuées and Les Gruenchers, Benjamin planted an additional 1.5 hectares of vines in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune. And later they will get back two additional vineyards of Chambolle 1er Cru, Gruenchers and Noirots, as well as some Chambolle village and Bourgogne vineyards, when the lease ends.
Benjamin is a strong believer that meticulous work in the vineyards is of utmost importance in making great wine. Organic viticulture is practiced and all wines are fermented in barrels with natural yeast with temperature control. In 2016 and 2017, the wines are fermented with 100% whole clusters due to stem ripeness; and in order to build up the collection of old barrels in the new winery, Benjamin decided to age his Bonnes-Mares in 100% new oak for vintages 2016-2018 and his Premier Crus with 50% new oak. For later vintages, the aim is to use 50% for Grand Crus and 30% for Premier Crus. The wines are bottled unfiltered with small amounts of sulphur.
Production is low and currently does not have any listing on Wine-searcher. The domaine has been receiving high appreciation, especially from Japan, and is definitely a domaine to keep your eyes on.
