Henri Magnien et Fils is a small family estate that was established back in 1987 but there are traces of vines being grown in the family since 1700. They are located at the top of Gevrey-Chambertin and at the foot of the hill of the famed Premier Cru Cazetiers in Côte de Nuits. Though only 6 hectares, they own a number of fantastic Premier Cru parcels in Gevrey including Lavaux St-Jacques, Estournelles St-Jacques, Les Cazetiers and Les Champeaux. Given the use of grapes from vines planted as early as 1915, they have very low yield across the board but make exceptional wines.  
 
The Domaine is now managed by Henri's grandson Charles who aims to "search to produce fine wine, not tannic wine – wine you can drink young, and keep if you want", and one of Charles' interesting practices is that he uses lightly-fired but long-time toasted oak barrels to reduce the presence of vanilla or coffee aromas. The quality from Henri Magnien continues to perform superbly well and it is one of the top names in Gevrey-Chambertin that everyone is paying attention to.
 
The flagship of the domain is Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 4 Carac'terres, only one barrel is produced each year in a customized 300-liter barrel. It is the blend of the best grapes of Henri Magnien’s four premier cru vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin. The special cuvee is made with 100% whole cluster and 100% new oak, giving a sensational performance and one of the most masculine wines in Gevrey-Chambertin.

 A strikingly elegant and overtly floral-suffused nose is comprised by both red and dark raspberry along with an abundance of spice nuances and in particular anise. There is impressive volume and mid-palate density to the medium-bodied flavors that exude a lovely salinity on the focused, powerful and strikingly long finale. I very much like the balance and sense of harmony here. One to look for.

Another success is the 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 4 Carac'terres, a medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety wine evocative of wild berries, rose petals, orange rind and peonies. Seamless, lively and perfumed, it stands out for its vibrant fruit tones and long, saline finish.
