Podere Le Ripi was founded in 1998 by Francesco Illy, a member of the renowned Illy family of Italy. The estate represents not only Francesco’s deep fascination with the land of Montalcino, but also the profound influence of his wife, Stella—herself a legendary figure in Italian winemaking.
Stella di Campalto’s commitment to biodynamics, practiced with both precision and sensitivity, led Francesco to understand that wine is not merely an agricultural product, but an intricate expression of terroir, form, and life. Observing how Stella engages in a dialogue with nature—crafting wines of silky finesse and pure, vibrant energy—Francesco resolved to bring this same reverence for the land to Podere Le Ripi. What began as the passion of a devoted wine lover soon evolved into a full commitment to biodynamic viticulture and ecological balance.
Francesco established biodynamics as the philosophical core of the estate, cultivating a holistic ecosystem that integrates vines, bees, livestock, and woodland. By respecting natural rhythms and combining this approach with Podere Le Ripi’s architecturally striking cellar, he produces a range of Brunello di Montalcino wines that are highly acclaimed on the international stage. Though the couple tends their respective vineyards across Montalcino, they share an unwavering pursuit of purity in expression. Today, Podere Le Ripi stands as one of the benchmark biodynamic estates in Montalcino, holding both Demeter certification and the prestigious Triple “A” recognition.
