Kumeu River is probably the next best Chardonnay producer outside of Burgundy. From New Zealand, a "new world" wine region, they participated in a blind tasting by fourteen wine professionals in 2015 against some of the top Burgundy producers such as Comte des Lafon, Etienne Sauzet, Domaine Leflaive and Joseph Drouhin and they submitted 4 styles in the 2012 vintage in which Kumeu River scored the highest in 3 of the 4 flights and tied in the last flight - leading to get the highest overall score. After the blind tasting, they continued to taste all the Kumeu River Chardonnays from the tiny, cool but impressive 2013 vintage which included the luscious early-developing Coddington Vineyard, the steely Hunting Hill, and the backward, concentrated Maté’s Vineyard and Jancis Robinson listed their Hunting Hill 2013 and Mate's Vineyard 2013 as one of the top wines from this tasting. Being so confident in the first place to participate in a blind tasting with all these lead producers from Burgundy and coming out on top proves just how impressive their Chardonnays are!
