En Primeur Release: Bell Hill Canterbury Pinot Noir & Chardonnay 2020

Marcel Giesen and Sherwyn Veldhuizen began Bill Hill Vineyard in 1997. They started to plant the vines in a very dense pattern at up to 11,363 vines per hectare on the very steep slopes in the unique vineyard. The quality is unarguably outstanding and Joe Czerwinski from Wine Advocate commented on these beautiful wines after his visit in 2019 and tasted Vintage 2015, saying that “Is there any doubt that Bell Hill has emerged as one of New Zealand's top Pinot Noir producers?”. It emerged to be one of the most sought after wines nowadays as the production is minuscule and are sold by mailing list or restaurants, undoubtedly it is also one of the best examples of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the southern hemisphere. 
 
The 2020 vintage experienced stable weather conditions, with a warm start to the growing season followed by a very short harvesting window in April due to low yields. The Pinot Noir, produced in a limited quantity of 4,167 bottles, offers a deep fruited nose with cool blue fruit notes, red florals, and baked spice, complemented by mouth-coating tannins and vibrant freshness. The Chardonnay, with only 2,089 bottles produced, displays bright yellow fruits, lifted white floral expressions, and underlying wet stone nuances, evolving into a textured and layered palate with stone fruit characters and a touch of lemon meringue richness. Both wines benefit from Bell Hill's unique limestone-rich terroir and cool climate, resulting in wines of remarkable precision, complexity, and aging potential.
