A Mature & Beautiful Chambolle Musigny from Domaine Robert Groffier

Founded by Robert Groffier’s father, Jules in the 1950s, the Robert Groffier Pere et Fils is based in Morey-St-Denis and is now run by Robert’s grandson, Nicolas. They own a large plot in Chambolle-Musigny and in fact they are the largest owner of Les Amoureuses. The Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers is one their flagship parcels, located just a few meters below Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru and is often the most surprising wine in blind tastings. Apart from the Chambolle-Musigny ownership, they also own 0.41ha in Chambertin Clos-de-Beze and a few plots spread across Gevrey-Chambertin. The plots in Gevrey-Chambertin are village wines made in small productions but have received lots of positive feedback. They are in fact considered to be one of the finest winemakers in the Cote d'Or, and even Robert Parker had once said -

"Each and every wine at this Domaine was a first-rate example of its terroir, from the Bourgogne to the Grand Crus.  The meticulous work of Serge Groffier (Robert's son) in the vineyards is evidenced by each glass of nectar from this well-known and certainly soon-to-be-famous Domaine." (Wine Advocate, Issue 118)

Groffier adjusts the vinification processes depending on the characteristics of each vintage, but they work with the same precision - performing a cold maceration for 5 to 6 days before going through a hot fermentation using only natural yeasts which will extricate all the color and flesh. The wines are then put into barrels with a very low percentage of new oak, around 25% for Gevrey and less than a third for the Grand Crus, then the wine is only racked once at the end of the élevage. The resulting wines are powerful, showing deep colors, good structure and smooth but persistent tannins enabling the wine to age well.

Confitured black raspberry in the nose of the Groffier 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers anticipate a more seamless ripeness than possessed by some of its stable mates, although at the same time this possesses a firmer feel and more obvious underlying structure, along with some of the oiliness noted in the corresponding Hauts Doix. Stimulating tartness and salinity, along with herbal pungency and black tea-like tannic grit (and grip), promise a show worth following for at least half a dozen years, and in the best case one will be rewarded with a dynamic display of carnal, mineral, and berry-intense Chambolle virtues.
