Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008 & 2009
The family of Bonneau du Martray descends directly from Chancellor Nicolas Rolin who founded the famous Hospices de Beaune in 1443, and produces only two Grand Cru wines: Corton-Charlemagne and Corton. Their plot in Corton-Charlemagne is the largest with 9.5 hectares, and owns the largest area of a single Grand Cru vineyard of any producer in all of Burgundy.
Being the only Burgundy Grand Cru facing west, the Charlemagne climate has the particularity of looking towards the setting sun and enjoying the sun's rays for many hours. The vines are positioned at the crossroads of varied and beneficial influences, the grapes - products of light rather than heat - reach optimal maturity. The harvested grapes receive light crushing before pressing to ensure a gentle extraction of the aromatic quintessence of each vintage, and are fermented in a combination of new and aged French oak barrels. They are aged on their fine lees for a second winter with two additional months in tanks, then finally bottled during a waning phase of the moon. The resulting wines are astonishingly appealing and its reputation is outstanding internationally that its wines were even served at a private birthday dinner party in 2006 for Queen Elizabeth II.
In late 2016, the estate announced the sale of the majority of its shares to American businessman Enos Stanley Kroenke, who already owns Screaming Eagle in California’s Napa Valley, and has big plans to push Bonneau du Martray to the forefront of the Burgundy market. Part of their Corton-Charlemagne has been sold to DRC and DRC's Corton-Charlemagne will be released to the market soon.
