Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru 2017 Selections: Porusots, Goutte d'Or, Genevrières & Charmes
Comtes Lafon has long been one of our favourite white wine producers as they offer beautiful Chardonnay that are of very high quality yet still with approachable price tags compared to the other top white producers like Coche Dury, Arnaud Ente and Roulot. Comtes Lafon own some decent terroirs in Meursault and produce Meursaults of astonishing depth and complexity. The current owner Dominique Lafon started managing the Domaine in 1985 and has maintained the glorious reputation of the Domaine for over 35 years, making outstanding Meursaults from different sites from Grand Cru down to Village!
Today we have a few premier cru selections from Comtes Lafon 2017 to offer which include their Porusots, Goutte d'Or, Genevrieres, and Charmes. One of the top vintages of the decade, these 2017 selections have all scored well with critics with no less than 91 points and as high as 95 points from Allen Meadows. Here too there is a whiff of petrol suffusing the cool green fruit, hazelnut, lemon rind and discreet matchstick whiffs. There is once again excellent richness to the broad-shouldered flavors that coat the palate with dry extract before concluding in a muscular, powerful and citrus zest-infused finish. This is excellent though note that as usual, this is built-to-age and a wine that going to need it.

The bigger and richer medium weight plus flavors possess excellent mid-palate density while displaying excellent depth and drive on the focused and powerful finish. Impressive.

A highly restrained and gorgeously elegant nose grudgingly offers up notes of naturally exotic and relatively high-toned aromas of kiwi, jasmine tea, spice and evident citrus influence. The racy and lacy middle weight flavors are built on a base of minerality and while the wonderfully long finish possesses excellent intensity, the basic character is one of finesse and refinement. I really like the overall depth and this too should age effortlessly.
