Located in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay which is home to some of the greatest Pinot Noir in all of France, Francis Egly was determined to take their Pinot Noir-dominant Champagnes up another few notches from where it already was when he took over from his father in 1980, and proceeded to switch to organic practices and reduced yields. In addition to the meticulous work done in the vineyards, Francis was equally attentive throughout the winemaking process. He harvests very ripe grapes, keeps only the first pressing using very gentle extraction and ages in barrel for years longer than most other counterparts, he creates absolutely beautiful Champagnes that truly expresses the terroir which the wines came from.

The NV Brut Grand Cru Tradition is bright, powerful and focused. Beams of acidity and mineral push the flavors forward and give the wine much of its pulsating energy. Candied lemon, smoke, crushed rocks, mint and dried pear are some of the notes that meld into the sculpted finish. Given the wine's tension and punch, I might cellar the Brut Tradition for another 6-12 months. This is a terrific showing.
