The 1996 vintage for Champagne is considered one of the greatest modern vintages, characterized by an exceptional combination of high ripeness and high acidity in the grapes. A warm summer concentrates the sugars, followed by cool northerly winds and cold September nights preserving the high acidity. The grapes achieved record levels of both ripeness (around 10 degrees potential alcohol) and acidity (around 10 g/l), a rare "10/10" phenomenon that had never been seen before. It displayed remarkable potential, and the finest cuvées realized that potential after extended cellaring.
