The White Wine Hiding Inside a Red Grand Cru: Vougeraie Clos Blanc de Vougeot 2014

Vougeot is red wine dominated appellation, home to the walled Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, one of Burgundy's most storied vineyards. There is a monopole, “Clos Blanc de Vougeot” tucked inside it is a single 2.2 hectare plot the Cistercian monks planted to Chardonnay back in 1110, and it has stayed white ever since. Today it belongs entirely to one producer, Domaine de la Vougeraie, so no one else in the world makes this wine. The vines grow on oolitic limestone, giving the drainage and minerality this corner of the Côte de Nuits is prized for, and Vougeraie farms them as the largest certified organic and biodynamic estate in the Côte d'Or which produce one of the most unique Chardonnay in Burgundy.
 
2014 is regarded as one of the finest white Burgundy vintages of the decade, and Domaine de la Vougeraie Clos Blanc de Vougeot is no exception. Scored 90-92pts from Vinous’ Neal Martin and described as a “very fine Vougeot”, we are delighted to offer the Clos Blanc de Vougeot 2014 in both 750ml and 1,500ml formats at competitive prices -

The 2014 Vougeot 1er Cru le Clos Blanc has a clean and detailed, granite and smoke-scented bouquet that is austere at first, but finds its voice with aeration. The palate is rounded and harmonious on the entry with touches of tinned peach and nectarine, a keen line of acidity and nicely integrated oak just filling out the finish. Give it a year or two once in bottle - it will be a very fine Vougeot.
