Tasted & Recommended: Charles Noellat Magnums from 2009 & 2010

Over the weekend, we have opened a magnum Morey-Saint-Denis Les Sionnieres 2009 from Charles Noellat and it's absolutely at prime now. And we also spotted these wines are coming from Domaine Lucie et Auguste Lignier.

The Noellat family has a very long history in Vosne-Romanee in which the two brothers, Charles and Ernest, were the main players in the family in the early twentieth century. Charles Noellat’s daughter Odile Noellat married Alain Hudelot later to form Hudelot-Noellat. Charles Noellat died in 1930s and because the domaine owns a few beautiful vineyards such as Richebourg and Romanee-St-Vivant, it attracted Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy to sell one-third of interest of Domaine Leroy to Japan's Takashimaya in order to secure funds to purchase Domaine Charles Noellat in 1988 - a move that has led to the global success of Leroy. Though the Domaine was sold, the family kept the rights to the name and original label of the domaine, and nowadays Anne Noellat’s son, Stephan Moreau, uses the name and label for his unique négociant operation "Charles Noellat" in which he purchases already-bottled wines directly from the cellars of Burgundy producers that have kept older stocks after tasting.

Tasted excellent today and available in a rare large format, these are extremely cheap, from at only HK$880 per 1.5L Magnum -
