Champagne Suenen is a family estate in the grand‑cru village of Cramant that began not as a domaine but as a grape‑growing business shaped by the ambitions of its owners. The Suenen family, originally from Belgium, moved to Cramant in 1898 and soon threw themselves into the region’s burgeoning Champagne trade, collecting and reselling grapes from the village from 1905 onward. It was Marcel, Aurélien Suenen’s great‑grandfather, who shifted the family’s direction by deciding in 1924 to bottle his own static white wine, an early step that planted the roots of what would become Champagne Suenen.
Four generations on, Aurélien Suenen stands as a resolutely terroir‑driven vigneron, deeply committed to expressing the complexity of Cramant’s chalky soils through meticulous organic and biodynamic farming. He works the vineyards by hand, using a hoe to lift the soils and encourage the vines’ roots to plunge into the deep chalk, while carefully parcel‑by‑parcel vinification—employing oak barrels, egg‑shaped concrete tanks, and enamel‑lined vats with native yeasts and minimal sulfur—yields Blanc de Blancs of striking clarity, tension, and mineral precision. As one of the most closely watched natural‑leaning growers in the Côte des Blancs, and a member of the respected Terres et Vins de Champagne collective, Suenen’s Champagnes are now widely regarded as emblematic of the region’s new, hyper‑expressive, terroir‑focused generation.
The Suenen family produces two serious non-vintage cuvees, the Oiry and C+C. Both are vinified roughly half in tank and the remainder in wood, complemented by a large-scale of 50% perpetual reserve to produce some full-bodied, rich and textural style Champagne which should not be missed -
