Just Arrived, New Release: Arnaud et Sophie Vintage 2021

A new star in Burgundy, Arnaud et Sophie was established by husband-and-wife duo Arnaud Sirugue and Sophie Noëllat, both from celebrated Vosne-Romanée estates - Robert Sirugue and Michel Noëllat respectively. The first vintage produced was the 2016 and they made 2 cuvees: Bourgogne Passe-Tout-Grain Rose which is made from Gamay and Pinot Noir grapes, and Vosne-Romanée Les Barreaux which is made from grapes from their family plot that is situated along the border of the southern part of the famous Cros Parantoux 1er Cru and also on the very border to Petits Monts. In 2018, they started to produce another two cuvees, a Meursault Grands Charrons and a Gevrey-Chambertin En Champs, expanding the portfolio even further.

Tasting note from Steen Öhman Winehog.org:

Arnaud et Sophie AS Vosne-Romane Les Barreaux 2021
The 2021 Barreaux is showing fine balance and vibrancy. It’s floral, with good depth and focus. Made with 50% whole-cluster fruit and 30% new oak with a slightly lighter toast, it is vivid and shows the light-footedness of the vintage. While a lesser wine than the 2020, I really prefer the 2021. Its delicacy is very welcome.

Arnaud et Sophie AS Gevrey-Chambertin En Champs 2021
The Gevrey En Champs is an interesting terroir for Arnaud and Sophie; the parcel is located on the slope in Gevrey towards Brochon, just below the 1er cru Champeaux. They were lucky in 2021 as hail struck here, but apparently not in this plot. The 50% whole-cluster vinification helps significantly, and the one-third-new Remond oak works well. A delightful wine, with lovely complexity. I really like this.

Arnaud et Sophie AS Meursault Les Grands Charrons 2021
Grands Charrons is an impressive Meursault terroir located at the core of the big village terroirs. With the delightful acidity typical of 2021, the low-sulphur regime gives the wine a delicate, free spirit. The elevage in Cavin barrels works well in 2021; not so sure for 2022!

Arnaud et Sophie AS Bourgogne Passe-Tout-Grain Rose 2021
The Bourgogne Passetoutgrains Rosé is made in Gilly-lès-Cîteaux, and normally requires a bit of time to settle down. The 2022 version is quite rich and generous, with plenty of ripe fruit – almost too rich at the moment. While I have a soft spot for this cuvee, this is on the somewhat flabby side currently. Still, it has nice complexity for a rosé, as always.
