A traditional and small domaine with just 5.5ha of vineyards, Jean Tardy owns a fascinating plot of Les Tres in Echezeaux Grand Cru, a comparatively premier plot adjacent to the Grand-Echezeaux. The ruins passed to Guillaume Tardy in recent years who has started to apply modern winemaking but still respect the traditions which were inherited from Jean and the family.

A highly spiced and mildly toasty nose features notes of anise, hoisin, clove and cinnamon as well as attractively fresh and bright aromas of plum and black berry liqueur. There is that very attractive quality of inner mouth perfume to the equally spicy and distinctly earthy broad-shouldered and seductively rich flavors that brim with an abundance of dry extract on the suave yet solidly precise, balanced and powerful finish where a touch of mocha surfaces. This should effortlessly reward 8 to 10 years in the cellar.

Notes of herbal tea, sandalwood and spice add a lovely sense of breadth to the very fresh aromas of various dark berries and violet. The sleek, intense and well-detailed flavors possess a relatively refined mouthfeel thanks primarily to the relatively fine-grained tannins that also shape the nicely complex and sneaky long finish that is also mildly austere. This should be approachable on the younger side but easily repay a decade or more of cellaring. This too is worth considering as it's very good.
