🇺🇸Domaine de la Côte: California's Most Burgundian Pinot Noir

Domaine de la Côte, based in California's Sta. Rita Hills, is widely regarded as one of the most Burgundian expressions of Pinot Noir grown outside of France. Founded by Raj Parr and Sashi Moorman, the estate sits in a cool, wind swept corner of the Santa Barbara coast where summer temperatures rarely climb above 25°C, a climate closer to Burgundy than most of California.

The winemaking team makes no secret of their reference point. "Our north star is certainly Burgundy," Moorman has said, and that influence runs deeper than style alone. The vineyards were planted with budwood sourced from Burgundy, at densities of around 10,000 vines per hectare, roughly double the norm for California Pinot Noir, echoing the close spacing found in the Côte d'Or. The result is intense competition among vines, low yields, and grapes that reflect a rare diatomaceous earth soil unique to the site.

In the cellar, the Burgundian approach continues: extensive use of whole bunches, restrained extraction, and a focus on transparency of site over sheer ripeness. Moorman has spoken about picking earlier to preserve freshness and terroir expression, noting that overripe fruit, a common issue in warmer California regions, produces less transparent wine, a lesson he believes Burgundy itself is now relearning amid climate change.

Across single vineyard bottlings, La Côte is the flagship which shows the perfume, precision, and structure that critics repeatedly compare to top Grand Cru Burgundy. It is this rare combination, old world restraint paired with a genuinely new world terroir, that has made Domaine de la Côte one of America's most closely watched producers of Pinot Noir.

96+pts Wine Advocate
The 2021 Pinot Noir La Côte is an energetic wine with plenty of aging potential. In the last couple of years, production from this nine-acre vineyard was halved when the team realized wine quality was better from the top portion of the vineyard, where it is shaly and better protected. Fruit from the bottom half of the vineyard is now allotted to the Pinot Noir Estate. Medium ruby and aromatically layered, it offers scents of pomegranate, cranberries and blackberries with nuances of graphite, lavender and amaro. Medium-bodied, its concentrated fruits are supported by powdery tannins and bright bursts of acidity, and it finishes with detailed accents of bitters and botanicals.
