Arrived This Week: Château Haut-Brion 1994 & 2004 from HK$2,841 per Bt

Château Haut-Brion stands as one of Bordeaux’s most historic and revered wine estates, with vines cultivated on its land since at least 1426 and winemaking documented from 1521. It is the oldest known estate in Bordeaux to have bottled and labeled its wine as a Grand Cru, bearing its own name and terroir.
 
The estate comprises 53 hectares, with 50 hectares dedicated to red grape varieties - primarily Merlot (about 45%), Cabernet Sauvignon (44%), Cabernet Franc (10%), and a touch of Petit Verdot (1%). The unique terroir of Haut-Brion consists of two raised hills of deep Gunzian gravel over clay, with white quartz pebbles scattered throughout. The significant proportion of clay in the soil is a key factor in the estate's higher proportion of Merlot, which is unusual for a Left Bank Bordeaux property and contributes to the wine's distinctive style.
 
Stylistically, Château Haut-Brion's red wines are renowned for being rounder, richer, and more elegant than their counterparts, such as the more austere La Mission Haut-Brion. The wines display a harmonious balance between power and finesse, with a silky texture and layers of ripe fruit, tobacco, and earthy notes. The influence of Merlot lends a plushness and approachability, while the gravelly soils provide structure and minerality. The result is a wine that is both immediately appealing and capable of extraordinary aging.
