26% Below World Lowest: Joseph Roty Gevrey-Chambertin La Brunelle 2021
Jul 08, 2025
Joseph Roty has been making wines since 1710 and the production has remained minuscule for over 300 years. After Joseph’s death in 2008, his son Phillippe took over the family business, at the same time set up an additional domaine under his own label, producing a small number of Marsannay wines. Even though Philippe, unfortunately, passed away in 2015, their combined operation continues to run by Philippe’s mother and brother Pierre-Jean, consistently producing high-quality wines.
The Roty family maintains their very old vines in which some were planted in the 1880s and still use very traditional ways of winemaking to this day. Despite having a very low profile, their wines never fail to amaze everyone and can always show the characteristics of a traditional Gevrey-Chambertin. Their wines usually have high concentrations and are full of dark fruits' purity, seamlessly integrated with their usual high usage of barrels. Clive Coates MW also commented that Roty's wines are "very distinctive. They are full, very intense, very perfumed and very harmonious. They are certainly immensely seductive.”
We have secured a very well-priced parcel of Joseph Roty Gevrey-Chambertin La Brunelle 2021 which has described as "hard to resist" by Wine Advocate's William Kelley, a classic and outstanding example of Gevrey-Chambertin, details are as follow and let us know if you would like to secure a few -

90pts William Kelley
The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin La Brunelle is hard to resist, wafting from the glass with notes of cherries, plums, spices and vine smoke, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and charming palate that's fleshy and polished, with a succulent core of fruit and melting tannins.
91pts Jasper Morris
A reasonably deep but fresh bright purple. This is on the angular side with the characteristic peppers of the vintage, but the fruit is notably persistent, and really quite exciting. Drink from 2025-2028. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted Nov 2022.
Subject to final confirmation. ETA Mid Sep 2025.
