Domaine Hudelot Noellat is widely appreciated as one of the top producers in Burgundy and one of our favourite domaines in Vosne-Romanée. Alain Hudelot-Noellat founded the domaine in 1962 and managed until 2007, then Alain’s grandson Charles van Canneyt took over the ruin and continues to put Hudelot Noellat in a higher stage. They own vineyards spread across Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny, Clos Vougeot and Nuits-St-Georges, including also the most famous Grand Crus Romanée-St-Vivant and Richebourg. Without question, they are one of those domaines who are capable of producing fantastic wines from Grand Crus to Village wines. They aim to work "as close to nature as possible"; therefore, they do their best to reveal the most sincere character of their terroirs, with manually harvesting and sorting, 80% destemming, and using indigenous yeasts. Their wines are not clarified nor filtered, and are kept in oak barrels for 16 months in which only 20% are new barrels.
 
Under the guidance of Charles van Canneyt, Hudellot Noellat has been on a steady rise to the top in Burgundy – turning wines which were once thought of as respectable into those with, as put by Neal Martin, “elegance, poise and that abstract term: ‘pinot.’”. Meadows notes “It's clear that [van Canneyt] has a sensitive touch as the Hudelot wines only seem to be going from one success to another”.

Moderate wood influence isn't really enough to detract from the attractively fresh aromas of notably ripe black cherry, raspberry and newly turned earth. Like the Petits Vougeots the intense and muscular flavors possess a sleek mouth feel and excellent volume while displaying very fine persistence on the firm, complex and impressively persistent finish. Note that at least some patience will be required.

A discreet application of wood sets off the spicy and very fresh aromas of red and dark currant that are laced with earth nuances. There is a lush and relatively refined mouth feel to the vibrant middle weight flavors that possess solid concentration to the dusty, sappy and ever-so-mildly rustic finale. Excellent.
