Cristal, the flagship cuvee of Louis Roederer is one of the most iconic wines in Champagne. It was first created in 1876 for Alexander II tsar of Russia, who was particularly an admirer of Louis Roederer’s Champagnes and requested the house’s best cuvee every year. As the society in Russia was unstable in 1800s, Cristal came in a unique flat-bottomed, transparent lead-crystal bottle to ensure no bombs were placed in the bottles!
 
Louis Roederer owns 214 hectares of vineyards in Champagne, allowing them to select the best grapes from the best vintages. Cristal is fresh and floral when young but has stunning aging potential. Under ideal storage conditions, a bottle of Cristal can last at least 20 years and go up to 40 years. I still recall a bottle of Cristal 1983 was monumental and energetic at its 39 years of age.
 
Last month, we organized a wine tasting at Le Wine Bar by Burgundy Cave in Taipei (https://www.lewinebartw.com) with a breathtaking line-up of four vintages: 2006, 2007, 2012 & 2014.
The 2006 Cristal remains our favorite vintage which is complex, powerful but precise, it is a joy to open nowadays with its tertiary notes start to develop; 2007 Cristal shows slightly under the shadow of 2006 but the performances are very close with brighter acidity; 2012 Cristal is seriously delineated with a distinguishable grapefruit note which is lovely; and we couldn’t hide our smiles after a few sips of the 2014 Cristal, it’s magnificent with dominant chamomile note that every element is precise. Cristal is a luxurious gastronomic wine that never disappoints tasters no matter when and where it’s consumed!
