Gevrey-Chambertin Le Clos Saint-Jacques is one of the most famous Premier Cru in Cote de Nuits with only five owners have plots going all the way from top to the bottom of the vineyard. It is located at the mouth of the Combe de Lavaut so that it receives cool breeze from the mountain, it is a steep slope with high elevation which sits above Chambertin and Clos de Beze Grand Cru. With debates over the years whether Clos Saint-Jacques should be promoted to Grand Cru, It has been already regarded as a extraordinary terroir which produces some of the best Gevrey Chambertin in the world.
 
One of the owners of Le Clos Saint-Jacques is Domaine Sylvie Esmonin, a domine in Gevrey Chambertin which owns 7.66ha of vineyard and only started to produce the wines under their family label in late 1980s, it is now managed by Sylvie Esmonin and she has been regarded as one of the most eminent female winemaker in Burgundy. Allen Meadows is one of the admirers of the brilliant winemakers and stated - “As I observed last year Esmonin has always been a gifted winemaker but the past few vintages have confirmed that she has become a consistent winemaker as well”.

A discreet touch of wood easily allows the overtly floral and wonderfully elegant spicy black cherry aromas to be appreciated. There is terrific intensity to the mineral-driven and once tautly muscular flavors that deliver the same superb depth on the very firm, serious and hugely long finale. While there is a very mild hint of warmth there is nothing else for which to reproach this beauty of a CSJ.

A really lovely and broad-ranging nose offers notes of green tea, cassis, poached plum, black cherry and discreet earth and spice wisps. There is outstanding richness to the full-bodied and velvet-textured flavors that coat the palate with sap before culminating in a stony and mocha-infused finish where a hint of wood appears. This is impressive but it's also impressively structured so note well that patience will be a virtue with this wine.
