Established his winery in 1966 and has been one of the pioneers in Napa Valley, Robert Mondavi has brought wines from California in a different stage. At early stage, he started to promote labelling the wines by grape varieties instead of a generic wine name. In 1968, he started to produce a dry oak-aged Sauvignon Blanc, which was very uncommon at the time. There was another big move in 1990s which he started a joint venture with Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild to create Opus One Winery, which still remains as the most recognizable estate in Napa Valley nowadays.

The powerful (14.1% alcohol), superb 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville (84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 7% Cabernet Franc) exhibits a complex, Pauillac-like nose of cedar, fruitcake, black currants, and spicy new oak. There is medium to full body, well-integrated sweet tannin and acidity, an opulent texture, and a layered, long finish.
