Anselme believes in low yields, organic viticulture and terroir, and makes a fantastic range of champagnes in their usual styles and lieux-dits. Among the line-up, Selosse’s Substance Blanc de Blancs attracts enormous demand around the globe, which is Selosse’s first solera-style cuvee which is normally used for the production of Sherry. It creates a unique oxidative and complex character which is untypical in the region, and certainly being regarded as one of the most memorable fine wines to try in the lifetime!

Since awarding the July 2019 disgorgement of Selosse's emblematic NV Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Substance a three-digit score, readers won't be surprised to learn that I've drunk a dozen bottles—all in the interest of due diligence, of course. Happily, the wine continues to show extraordinarily well, bursting from the glass with aromas of honeyed pears, buttered toast, candied peel, fenugreek and almond paste. Full-bodied, textural and enveloping, it's vinous, concentrated and sapid, marrying to remarkable effect the unique patina imparted by Selosse's distinctive winemaking practices with the powerful yet incisive profile that defines Avize. This is a brilliant Champagne, and my only regret is that I doubt I'll have any bottles left five years from now.

All the 2019 disgorgements of Selosse's emblematic Blanc de Blancs cuvées are brilliant, and revisiting the November 2019 disgorgment of the NV Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru V. O. (Version Originale), I clearly underrated this wine on release. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dried fruits, citrus oil, toasted nuts, drawn butter, yellow orchard fruit, clear honey and fenugreek, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and vinous, with terrific concentration allied with excellent tension. In fact, if this disgorgement stands out, it's for its especially notable cut and precision. Concluding with a long, sapid finish, it's a bottle that doesn't survive very long after opening in our household.
