If you ask us to recommend a good-value Chardonnay, Domaine de la Bongran will probably be one of our top picks. While Chablis, Cote de Nuits and Cote de Beaune are the common favourites for Chardonnay lovers, Domaine de la Bongran in Mâcon is definitely a hidden gem. Lying the furthest South among the five sub-regions, Mâcon has a slightly warmer climate therefore producing simpler, fruit-forward wines. Some may hence think this means the wines will come with less minerality and depth; however, wines from Domaine de la Bongran is not the case - they are relatively richer, fuller and more complex. 

Jean Thevenet is the current owner and winemaker at Domaine de la Bongran. His father noticed the great potential in the Viré-Clessé appellation so he bought more surrounding parcels and sold off other flatland property. Jean was one of the handful of people who were first credited for implementing organic, minimal and natural practices in their productions back in the 1980s. In the creation of Viré-Clessé 'Cuvée Tradition E.J. Thevenet', Jean Thevenet decided to include small portions of botrytis grapes to complete its structure.  These are truly fantastic wines that are expressive and fantastic.
