SALE: Pierre Damoy Clos de Beze Grand Cru 2006, “structured effort for the vintage” Allen Meadows

Surely if you are into Burgundy you may recall an iconic farmhouse in Gevrey-Chambertin with painted words "Chambertin Clos de Beze Domaine Pierre Damoy" in bold black. The Domaine Pierre Damoy has a long history in Burgundy which is now managed by its 5th generation, and the oldest vines were planted in 1920. They produce wines from some of the best plots in the region including the aforementioned Clos de Beze, Chapelle-Chambertin, Chambertin and the monopole Clos Tamisot. Fruit is also purchased from vineyards in Couchey and Fixin to produce a Bourgogne. 

 

When current owner Pierre Damoy took over in 1992, he brought a new energy and approach to the domaine, in which he completely renovated the winery in 2002 and installed equipment able to handle the fruit as gently as possible in order to preserve the character of each plot as much as possible. Then in the winery, all fruit is destemmed and undergoes a long cold maceration before fermentation, and fruit from each block is fermented separately, then the wines are aged for 14-18 months in 70-100% new oak for Grand Crus and 30-50% for the Premier Cru and Village wines; and finally are released without any fining or filtering. Success of this new approach was evident in his 1993 vintage which Robert Parker commented that their Chambertin, Chambertin Clos-de-Beze and Chapelle-Chambertin were "the finest wines made at this estate in more than three decades".

An expressive, ripe and very spicy nose of earthy dark berry fruit aromas nuanced by a hint of animale that is also picked up on the rich, full and sweet flavors that are also impressively concentrated and even more powerful, all wrapped in a mouth coating finish that displays hints of coffee and mocha. This is a relatively structured effort for the vintage and will require at least a decade to be at its best. Drink: 2018+
