Joseph Roty has been making wines since 1710 and the production has remained minuscule for over 300 years. After Joseph’s death in 2008, his son Phillippe took over the family business, at the same time set up an additional domaine under his own label, producing a small number of Marsannay wines. Even though Philippe, unfortunately, passed away in 2015, their combined operation continues to run by Philippe’s mother and brother Pierre-Jean, consistently producing high-quality wines.

The Roty family maintains their very old vines in which some were planted in the 1880s and still use very traditional ways of winemaking to this day. Despite having a very low profile, their wines never fail to amaze everyone and can always show the characteristics of a traditional Gevrey-Chambertin. Their wines usually have high concentrations and are full of dark fruits' purity, seamlessly integrated with their usual high usage of barrels. Clive Coates MW also commented that Roty's wines are "very distinctive. They are full, very intense, very perfumed and very harmonious. They are certainly immensely seductive.” 

We have been following Joseph Roty’s wines in recent years and every of their bottles have impressed us, especially their village wines which show their lovely fruitiness even when young and offer superb value for money. Wine critic Stephen Tanzer had once complimented their village wines, saying, "The village wines, including those from Marsannay, routinely outperform most premier crus from the northern Cote de Nuits. And they are reasonably priced”.
