Robert Groffier 1er Cru Selections Arriving This Week Incl. Amoureuses, Sentieres & Hauts Doix
Founded by Robert Groffier’s father, Jules in the 1950s, the Robert Groffier Pere et Fils is based in Morey-St-Denis and is now run by Robert’s grandson, Nicolas. They own a large plot in Chambolle-Musigny and in fact they are the largest owner of Les Amoureuses. The Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers is one their flagship parcels, located just a few meters below Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru and is often the most surprising wine in blind tastings. Apart from the Chambolle-Musigny ownership, they also own 0.41ha in Chambertin Clos-de-Beze and a few plots spread across Gevrey-Chambertin. The plots in Gevrey-Chambertin are village wines made in small productions but have received lots of positive feedback. They are in fact considered to be one of the finest winemakers in the Cote d'Or, and even Robert Parker had once said -
"Each and every wine at this Domaine was a first-rate example of its terroir, from the Bourgogne to the Grand Crus. The meticulous work of Serge Groffier (Robert's son) in the vineyards is evidenced by each glass of nectar from this well-known and certainly soon-to-be-famous Domaine." (Wine Advocate, Issue 118)
Groffier adjusts the vinification processes depending on the characteristics of each vintage, but they work with the same precision - performing a cold maceration for 5 to 6 days before going through a hot fermentation using only natural yeasts which will extricate all the color and flesh. The wines are then put into barrels with a very low percentage of new oak, around 25% for Gevrey and less than a third for the Grand Crus, then the wine is only racked once at the end of the élevage. The resulting wines are powerful, showing deep colors, good structure and smooth but persistent tannins enabling the wine to age well.

Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru 2006
HK$4,200 per bottle, 10 available (Immediately available)
93pts Stephen Tanzer
Bright dark red. Captivating nose offers redcurrant, raspberry, iron, tobacco, minerals and coffee. Lush, silky and sweet; youthfully reticent in the mouth but already offers an ineffably complex perfume. Boasts impressively fine, late-arriving tannins for the vintage. The wine's firm acid/tannin spine gives the finish excellent bite. A beauty.
Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru 2014
HK$3,700 per bottle, 3 available (Immediately available)
91pts Stephen Tanzer
Bright dark red. Pure but subdued aromas of dark berries, menthol, red licorice and spices. Youthfully imploded and a bit medicinal in the early going but still with a smooth texture to its smoky, soil-driven flavors. Nicolas Groffier mentioned that this wine is typically woody at the bottling but today the oak doesn't bother me. Finishes savory and long, with substantial granular tannins and a suggestion of chocolatey ripeness. Still, I don't fine the éclat or flavor definition for a higher score.
Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers 1er Cru 2015
HK$1,750 per bottle, 6 available (Immediately available)
93pts Neal Martin
The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers 1er Cru has an engaging, enticing, detailed bouquet of tart red cherry, red currant, crushed stone and subtle undergrowth/fern aromas that gather momentum with aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced, with integrated new oak that complements and enhances the substance of this outstanding Chambolle-Musigny. It just feels natural and self-assured at this early stage, which is surely is a good omen for the future.
Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts Doix 1er Cru 2015
HK$1,900 per bottle, 6 available (ETA 6-8 weeks)
93pts Neal Martin
The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts Doix 1er Cru has a more compact, high-toned bouquet than Drouhin’s Chambolle premier cru tasted alongside, with darker fruit (blueberry and bilberry) complementing the red fruit. The palate is sweet and rounded on the entry and quite candied in style, but displays perfect acidity. There is plenty of substance toward the finish, as well as the roundness one seeks in Chambolle-Musigny. A touch of spiciness develops with aeration .This is a marvelous premier cru.
