The 2008 Vin de Constance is the latest release from the estate. “We were happy with the 2008,” Matthew told me. “But it was tough to follow-up a great vintage. It spent a slightly shorter time in barrel and has 160g/L residual sugar with a pH of 3.6. It had the lowest volatile acidity in a Vin de Constance in a long time. To me the 2008 is more toward the older style of Vin de Constance.” It already offers a very complex bouquet with fresh pineapple, quince, Japanese yuzu, just a hint of grass clippings and then later mille fieulle. It is obviously tightly wound at the moment, but extremely well focused. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine viscous entry that immediately comes across as very elegant and refined. It feel smooth and pure – gentle in the mouth, caressing the senses with its quince and marmalade tinged finish with a suggestions of shaved ginger on the aftertaste. Returning after 40 minutes, the finish has mellowed and attained a beguiling effervescent quality, almost like an unctuous Lucozade! Wonderful.

The 2012 Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine delivers 160 grams per liter of residual sugar with a pH of 3.7 and, spent 28 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels. There is actually great similarity on the nose, perhaps a little more floral than the 2011 with mirabelle, and a touch of petrol infusing the honey and marmalade aromas. The palate is unctuous on the entry, nicely balanced as the acidity slices through the rich honeyed fruit that lingers long in the mouth, a touch of orange zest and nectarine towards the finish. I have a preference for this Vin de Constance over the 2012 - a superb dessert wine from Matthew Day.
Klein Constantia Vin de Constance 2015

A pale gold color, the 2015 Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine has strong, precise aromas of golden raisins and orange marmalade. The palate shows great balance between sweetness, alcohol and acid and is sweet but not as overly sweet as many other sticky wines. Wow, this is delicate with generous floral tones and is really delicious. The grapes were harvested in different tries to select fresher berries earlier at the beginning of the harvest in order to maintain acidity levels in the wine, while other berries were harvested later in the season to increase sweetness. This wine captures the essence of Vin de Constance and was aged in a combination of 50% new French oak, Hungarian oak and French Acacia barrels.
