Tasted & Recommended! The Best Italian White: Valentini Trebbiano d'Abruzzo

Valentini remains one of the oldest and greatest names in Italian viniculture for traditional winemaking, with origins dating back to 1650. They were first recognized for the quality of their wines in 1868 made by Camillo Valentini. However, as was common during the time, the estate was managed by a factor, not by a member of the family. It was in the 1950s that the first Valentini, Edoardo, was dedicated to the propriety and later passed down to his son Francesco Paolo after his death in 2006, and then now his grandson Gabriele.

They are most well known for their Valentini Trebbiano d'Abruzzo which is widely considered to be Italy's greatest white wine thanks to the intense, complex and ageworthy style of the wine. To add to the wine’s depth and multifaceted personality, there is a ruthless selection of fruit in which Edoardo only selected the best 5% of fruit to be bottled, with the rest sold off in bulk; and Francesco took on the same approach after taking over, maybe even more so. The vines are trained in the traditional pergola method and yields are aggressively restricted. The wine is fermented and aged in large Slavonian oak barrels, with the youngest being 70 years old.

“It is with the white, made from the usually ordinary Trebbiano grape, that Valentini stakes its claim to greatness.” - Eric Asimov

“One of Italy’s most iconic producers.” - Antonio Galloni

Quantities are limited and hence sourcing of this wine is not easy, plus anticipation of increasing demands for this wine, it is only wise to secure them whenever available, or pay a higher price later, if you are even able to get access to any.

Luminous straw-yellow. Tangy aromas of nectarine, pineapple, apple, minty herbs and lime, complicated by a bright mineral undertone.
