NM92pts "Excellent": 2018 Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre

While Coche Dury, Arnaud Ente and Roulot are undeniably marvellous domaines with very high quality productions across the board but they also come with high price tags. If you are searching for some decent wines from Meursault with a more approachable price tag, Domaine des Comtes Lafon is one of the best names to follow. They own some decent terroirs in Meursault and produce Meursaults of astonishing depth and complexity but which still remains at friendly prices nowadays given the quality it offers. The current owner Dominique Lafon started managing the Domaine in 1985. Over the past 35 years, he has maintained the glorious reputation of the Domaine and has been making outstanding Meursaults from different sites. The Domaine produces many outstanding Meursaults from Perrieres, Charmes, Genevrieres, Clos de la Barre and Désirée.
Today we are pleased to offer Comtes Lafon's 2018 Meursault Clos de la Barre which is an enclosed monopole of the domaine, located just behind the family’s main living quarters. A high proportion of old vines are found here with vines dating back as far as 1950, the youngest from 2004. The fruits are handled by whole-cluster pressing and using indigenous yeast fermentation, and then aged for 18-20 months with only light fining when necessary. From a fantastic Burgundy white vintage of recent, this is praised to be "excellent" by Neal Martin (Vinous) scoring this with 92 points, and "good verve to the delicious medium-bodied flavors" by Allen Meadows who scored it with 90 points. With only 24 bottles available, be quick to let us know if you'd like to secure any of this! -

92pts Neal Martin, Vinous
The 2018 Meursault Clos-de-la-Barre is a clear step up from the Désirée, showing much more delineation and more Meursault-like in character, touches of hazelnut infusing the red apple and light peeled peach skin aromas. The oak here seems to be better integrated. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and touches of orange peel and apricot. Fresh and focused, culminating in a persistent spicy finish. Excellent.

90pts Allen Meadows
There is a phenolic note (think olive or nut oil elements) to the notably ripe white and yellow orchard fruit that includes hints of apricot, white peach and passion fruit that are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. There is good verve to the delicious medium-bodied flavors that possess fine mid-palate density that is offset by the firm acid spine supporting the chiseled, linear and bone-dry finale. This is more tightly wound than it usually is and should reward mid-term cellaring.
