The iconic polychromatic-tiled Hôtel-Dieu (Hospices de Beaune) in central Beaune currently owns around 60 hectares which the majority are used for Pinot Noir production and the rest used for Chardonnay, in which around 85% are premier crus and grand crus. They have entrusted 22 winemakers to produce wines and sell their productions at their auction which offer great sentimental and financial value. Each of these entrusted winemakers have deep roots in Burgundy and possess intimate knowledge of the terroir and the secret to making fine wines, and one of which is the famed Albert Bichot.
Today we are pleased to offer the Hospices de Beaune Beaune 1er Cru Cuvee Hugues et Louis Betault 2003 by Albert Bichot. The history of this cuvee dates back to the mid-17th century in which Hugues Bétault was an Equerry and Councillor to the King of France, and saved the Hôtel-Dieu from ruin, following grievous wars and epidemics. He bought land for kitchen and flower gardens, and built an airy infirmary. His brother Louis made further generous donations, after the death of Hugues. The cuvee is made with Pinot Noir from 1er Cru plots in Beaune, including Les Aigrots, La Mignotte and Les Grèves.
