"One of the region's grand old estates.” - Joe Czerwinski of Wine Advocate

Château Pradeaux stands as a benchmark estate in Bandol, Provence, with a history that stretches back to 1752 when it entered the Portalis family through inheritance. The estate, perched near the Mediterranean in Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer, has weathered centuries of upheaval—from the French Revolution to the ravages of World War II—emerging each time with renewed vitality. The modern era of Château Pradeaux began in earnest in 1940, when the indomitable Countess Arlette Portalis and her mother revived the domaine, transforming it into the “kingdom of Mourvèdre.” Today, the estate remains in the hands of the Portalis family, guided by Cyrille Portalis, who continues the tradition of meticulous, hands-on winemaking.

The soul of Château Pradeaux is Mourvèdre, the noble grape that defines Bandol’s reds and rosés. The estate’s Bandol Rouge is composed of at least 95% Mourvèdre from old, head-trained vines, with a touch of Grenache lending subtle spice. Grapes are never destemmed, and the wines are aged for a minimum of four years in large, old oak foudres, allowing the formidable tannins to soften and the wine’s profound complexity to emerge. These are wines built for the cellar, renowned for their ability to age gracefully for decades, revealing layers of dark fruit, garrigue, and wild Provençal herbs as the years unfold.
