William Kelley is widely recognized as one of the world's most influential wine critics, best known as Editor-in-Chief of The Wine Advocate, where his coverage spans Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Champagne. Still only in his early thirties, he has also turned to winemaking, translating his deep tasting expertise into practice and holding to uncompromising quality standards despite limited resources. William began making wine in Burgundy in 2018, producing a Chambolle-Musigny from grapes sourced from Domaine Felettig. Today he owns only around 1.5 hectares of vineyards, with the rest of his fruit purchased. His relentless attention to detail has already earned him a distinctive reputation within Burgundy's wine community.
 
To meet and maintain his exacting standards, William works only with like-minded growers and retains control over vineyard management and harvest timing. The grapes are fully destemmed, followed by extended maceration and gentle pressing to avoid over-extraction, with fermentation times finely adjusted. The wines are aged for 18 to 36 months in 100% new oak in his cellar in Pommard. He originally used older barrels, but after problems with contamination he turned to studying new-oak selection, spending several years identifying three cooperages that meet his requirements. The barrels receive only a light toast, resulting in wines of great finesse and refinement.
