Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg was established in Vosne-Romanee in 1933 by Jeanne Gibourg and AndrĂ© Mugneret and produced Bourgogne Rouge, Vosne-RomanĂ©e, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Echezeaux Grand Cru. When their son, Georges Mugneret who was originally an ophthalmologist took over, he acquired more plots such as Clos Vougeot Grand Cru in 1953, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru in 1971, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru in 1977, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vignes Rondes in 1982 and Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru âLes Feusselottesâ in 1985 and he became the driving force of the domaine, leading it to become one of the powerhouses in Vosne-Romanee. The domaine is now passed down to the third generation in the family - Marie-Christine and Marie-Andree - daughters of Georges Mugneret. Their wines remain consistent in quality and remains one of the very top producers in Vosne-Romanee. Critics and professionals have never been shy to show their appreciation for this domaine -

The velvety and exceptionally rich flavors possess a different and more seductive texture than usual if perhaps a bit less minerality, all wrapped in a firm, serious and youthfully austere finish. Patience required but this is very promising.

A very ripe yet still reasonably fresh nose grudgingly reveals notes of poached plum, cassis, warm earth and a touch of forest floor. The big-bodied flavors possess a highly seductive texture that is at once opulent and velvety, all wrapped in a robust, powerful and exceptionally firm finish that exhibits outstanding length. Even so, this is one big Clos de Vougeot that is going to require a very long snooze in a cool cellar.

A slightly riper nose reluctantly reveals its aromas of poached plum, newly turned earth and plenty of Vosne-like spice nuances. There is better freshness and very on the palate of the middle weight flavors that, somewhat unusually, possess a slightly finer texture thanks to the relatively fine-grained tannins shaping the firm finish. While there is a touch of backend rusticity, overall, this is a relatively refined Nuits villages that should repay a decade plus of bottle aging.
