Domaine de Montille is probably one of the most inspiring stories in Burgundy – starting off with a very small domaine with only 2.5 hectares of vineyard in the 1950s, Hubert de Montille had been managing the domaine but retained his profession as a lawyer at the same time. Hubert’s son, Etienne, started to take on more responsibilities at the Domaine from the 1990s and successfully led Domaine de Montille to become one of the leading producers in Burgundy. He began practicing biodynamic farming 15 years ago and acquired a few domaines to extend their ownership of land to about 35 hectares. In many vintages, Etienne included over 50% of whole cluster grapes during fermentation and maintained soft oak influence - usually 30% new oak or less - and only about 40-50% new oak for the top wines.

A spicy, pure and wonderfully elegant nose offers up plenty of floral character along with a plenitude of spice elements on the mostly red berry fruit scents that remain quite primary, which is not surprisingly given the large format bottling. There is a fine sense of vibrancy to the intensely mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess solid mid-palate concentration as well as impeccably good balance on the balanced and Zen-like finale. This is not an especially big wine but I very much like the sense of harmony.

Pale pure and fresh, with lightly dancing red fruit. At first it is really tight on the palate, then the fruit begins to develop, ethereal cherries, ultra-pure, and in due course a little bit of velvet in the texture, a sweetly beautiful wine. OK to consider starting in on this, but no hurry. Tasted Jan 2019.
