Same Scroe with Montrachet, 2017 Fontaine-Gagnard Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Set up after the marriage between Richard Fontaine and Gagnard Delagrange in 1985, Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard has since been producing excellent Chardonnays and nowadays is still a name that is “under-the-radar” but attracts lots of wine collectors to secure it during En Primeur. The Domaine has beautiful ownership in Chassagne-Montrachet with a few Premier Crus as well as Batard-Montrachet and Le Montrachet Grand Cru. Winemaking remains traditional in the cellar, creating intense, powerful and complex wines that are classically balanced with genuine expressions of the terroirs. 
 
Among the fantastic line-up, Fontaine-Gagnard ‘s Batard-Montrachet and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru offer extraordinary values for drinkers who are looking at classic style of top-tier Chardonnay from Burgundy. They remain very well-priced against the other producers in the market. The production are minuscule as well, Batard-Montrachet comes from a 0.3 hectare of vines lying on the Chassagne-Montrachet side, and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is compiled from 3 separate parcels of vines that are now 100 years of age and aggregate 0.33 hectare of vines. 

From an outstanding vintage of the decade, 2017 Fontaine-Gagnard Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru is remarkable which has received the same score as Le Montrachet. Sadly there are only 6 bottles available so let us know if you would like any of these -

A deft touch of wood surrounds the aromas of equally restrained and quite floral, lemon zest and subtle spice hints. The ripe and rich large-scaled flavors are relatively fine while delivering a balanced, linear and superbly persistent finish that is notably dry. This too is very much built-to-age but in contrast to the Criots, this is going to need at least a decade of cellaring first.
