Set up after the marriage between Richard Fontaine and Gagnard Delagrange in 1985, Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard has since been producing excellent Chardonnays and nowadays is still a name that is “under-the-radar” but attracts lots of wine collectors to secure it during En Primeur. The Domaine has beautiful ownership in Chassagne-Montrachet with a few Premier Crus as well as Batard-Montrachet and Le Montrachet Grand Cru. Winemaking remains traditional in the cellar, creating intense, powerful and complex wines that are classically balanced with genuine expressions of the terroirs.
Among the fantastic line-up, Fontaine-Gagnard ‘s Batard-Montrachet and Criots-Bâtard-MontrachetGrand Cru offer extraordinary values for drinkers who are looking at classic style of top-tier Chardonnay from Burgundy. They remain very well-priced against the other producers in the market. The production are minuscule as well, Batard-Montrachet comes from a 0.3 hectare of vines lying on the Chassagne-Montrachet side, and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is compiled from 3 separate parcels of vines that are now 100 years of age and aggregate 0.33 hectare of vines.
From an outstanding vintage of the decade, 2014 Fontaine-Gagnard Batard-Montrachet is remarkable and are accredited with fantastic 94pts which is the same with Domaine de la Romanee-Cinti Batard Montrachet 2014! Here the nose is very firmly reduced and while you could try decanting it I would suggest just leaving it alone in a cellar for a minimum of 2 to 3 years instead. Otherwise there is outstanding richness and concentration to the big-bodied and again overtly muscular flavors that possess evident power and superb length on the long and serious finale where a hint of bitter lemon appears. Patience.
