The most hallowed name in the world of Burgundy, possibly even the entire world of wines, given its quality and longevity of their wines, as well as the prices they fetch on the secondary market, Domaine de la Romanee-Conti owns or leases a total of 27.99 hectares of grands crus in Vosne-Romanée, Chassagne-Montrachet and (since 2009) Corton, including La Tâche, Romanée Saint-Vivant, Echézeaux, Grands Echézeaux, Richebourg, La Romanée Conti, Corton Bressandes, Le Montrachet, Corton Clos du Roi, Corton Renardes and Bâtard-Montrachet. These vineyards are all excellently located and have converted to complete biodynamics since 2007 after seven years of experimenting with the methods. In the cellar, there are no special tricks but emphasis on minimal intervention in which the owner Aubert de Villaine has said that "the ideal is to do nothing but that is clearly impossible".

Still deep ruby color. A wonderfully fresh, cool and relatively restrained nose reflects notes of ultra-spicy and floral dark berry fruit nose evidences only mild hints of secondary character. The seductively rich yet attractively vibrant medium weight flavors are shaped by a still moderately firm core of ripe tannins before culminating in a relatively robust and powerful finish. While with 30+ minutes of air this could be approached with pleasure, for my taste the 2002 Ech is still very much on the way up and will likely need the better part of another 4 to 7 years before it arrives at its full apogee.
