Nicolas Potel started his negotiant business in 1996 under his name and since then he has created a name for himself among drinkers who look for great value Burgundies. He has an extensive sourcing network of high quality grapes and has the skills to produce fantastic Burgundies at excellent price tags. Sadly, he suffered financial hardship and decided to sell his business in 2004; however, in 2009 he created a new name under Roche de Bellene to continue his negotiant business in Beaune. With the new label, great qualities are retained and Nicolas Potel has been aggressively working on biodynamic methods in which most of the growers he works with are operating either organically or biodynamically.
 
Today we have accessed a tiny parcel of Romanee-St-Vivant Grand Cru 2005, it positioned well considering their price tags, even compared against the legendary DRC. A real counterpart of Domaine de la Romanee Conti but at only 10% of its price, this is a good opportunity to buy before it disappears from the market –

The Potel 2005 Romanee-St.-Vivant displays absolutely riveting richness and complexity from stem to stern. Roasted meats, soy-like savor and pure essence of elderberry, black raspberry and plum are wreathed in iris and lilies, scented with clove and star anise, and tinged with citrus zest. This saturates and stains the palate, yet in the silkiest, most subtle, tender way while leaving behind a profound sense of minerals. “Lush” and “luscious” gain new meaning. The wine’s sensuality and elegance keeps one from focusing on its sheer density but that too is formidable. Surely this will be worth cellaring for 15-20 years.
