Follin-Arbelet Romanee-St-Vivant 2006 & 2013, Higher-Scored than DRC at 10% of their Price

Among the big Grand Crus in Vosne-Romanee, Romanee-Saint-Vivant is located in the southern side of Romanee-Conti and covers 9 hectares in Vosne-Romanee, situated on lower slopes. While it might not be as famous as its neighbors Romanee-Conti, La Romanee, La Tache and Richebourg, the owners have been carefully cultivating the land and hence qualities have shown vast improvements over the years and have now become a serious rival of Richebourg, and sometimes even outperforms its masculine neighbor. Grapes from this vineyard produce the lightest, most delicate and aromatic Grand Cru from Vosne-Romanee.
Domaine Follin-Arbelet is one of the producers of Romanee-St-Vivant. The owner, Franck Follin-Arbelet, grew up in Burgundy's Côte d’Or and while he was always attracted to viticulture, his family’s vines were all rented out and they did not make their own wine. He gravitated towards Geology which gave him an expertise in soil. In 1993, he started his own estate in Aloxe-Corton and together with his wife, Christine, who comes from the well-known Latour family, produces one village wine, four premier crus, and four grand crus in Aloxe-Corton (their hometown), Pernand-Vergelesses, and Vosne-Romanée which includes Romanee-St-Vivant, situated in Clos des Quatre Journaux, not far away from Domaine de la Romanee Conti's plot. They take on a traditional winemaking approach - fermenting in open-top wooden vats, using only indigenous yeasts, and the wines are bottled in unfined and unfiltered to create the pure and intense wines they are known for. Their Romanee-St-Vivant 1999 was once featured in the highly influential Japanese wine manga <Drops of God> -
Today we are pleased to offer Follin-Arbelet Romanee-St-Vivant 2006 and 2013. Both of the vintages have scored higher than that of Domaine de la Romanee Conti but priced at a huge fraction of DRC -

Black colour. Molten brown sugar character and then very juicy fruit. Very seductive indeed even if not for purists. Sinewy and positive tannins. Not nearly ready but beautifully constructed.

HK$3,000 per bottle (^World Lowest from HK$4,089)

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Romanée Saint-Vivant Grand Cru hit the ball out of the park and was one of my favorite wines of the vintage. It clearly has a lot of fruit on the nose with delicately spiced black cherries, bay leaf and undergrowth unfurling with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, a silver thread of acidity, extraordinarily pure and caressing with beautiful poise on the finish. Class from start to finish, this is a bona fide Grand Cru.
