Tasted and Recommended: Alex Gambal Beaune Blanc 2017

A Bostonian who relocated from the US to Beaune, France in 1993, Alex Gambal gave up his long-time career in real estate to start his venture into winemaking after studying in a famous wine school - Lycée Viticole in Beaune. He started off with a small-scale negotiant business which aimed at focusing on quality, then founded his own domaine in 1997, in which he set off to purchase fruits and gained ownership of 30 acres of vineyard including beautiful sites in Batard-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, etc which has been farmed with organic/biodynamic practices in the past decade or so. His winemaking method takes on the traditional Burgundian approach and he picks only the best grapes and ferments the wines in barrels but with modest influence. The wines produced perfectly reflect the characteristics of each terroir, making it an absolute joy to explore Alex’s bottles from different terroirs and vintages.

Due to the fantastic quality of his wines, the domaine quickly became a popular name among wine collectors in Europe and the United States. Sadly, Alex’s children were not interested in pursuing a career in wine like their father, so Alex decided to sell the domaine and was sold last year to the Boisset family who also owns the famous Domaine de la Vougeraie, and commented that Alex Gambal is "a fantastic domaine with nice vines and great wines"

We have recently tasted a bottle of Alex Gambal Beaune Blanc 2017 and it offers extraordinary price to quality value, with a balanced oak influence to the wine, this is a structured Chardonnay built from an outstanding vintage of Burgundy white. However, there are only 24 bottles left and it will be impossible to source again in the future -
