The story began when a giant building contractor, Joseph Phelps invested in vineyards in the Napa Valley and decided to move to Napa Valley from Colorado in the 1970s. In 1974, Joseph Phelps and his winemaker Walter Schugg produced the first vintage of Joseph Phelps Insignia, which was one of the first Bordeaux blends in California at the time and now become one of the legendary wines in Napa Valley.

Joseph Phelps also produces a house style Bordeaux which remains at an affordable price and is able to be enjoyed when young – the Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon. Unlike many other producers in America, they also blend with a small proportion of Bordeaux blends such as Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot in which it is dedicated to remain in the traditional Bordeaux approach but aged in around 50% of American oak barrels.

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is made up of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec and 2% Cabernet Franc aged for 18 months in 48% new French and American oak and bottled in May/June of 2018. Deep garnet-purple colored, it sings of crushed blackcurrants, blackberry pie and blueberry compote with suggestions of cigar box, menthol, rose hip tea and baking spices. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with vibrant black fruit laced with plenty of spicy sparks, framed by grainy tannins and oodles of freshness and finishing long with a menthol kick.
