Treasurable bottles not to be missed: Ex-Domaine Domaine Leflaive Grand Cru

One of our constant favourites of Chardonnay producers from Burgundy and for many others around the world too, Domaine Leflaive has been an eminent winemaker in the world of wines which has been continuously producing astounding Chardonnay from Puligny-Montrachet for many decades. Madame Anne-Claude Leflaive built a strong reputation for the label under her careful and special attention in the vineyard, making some of the most fruit-forward and terroir-expressive wines that are worthy to be added to every wine collector's cellar since taking over from her father in 1994. Sadly Anne-Claude passed away in 2015 and Brice de La Morandiere's, Anne-Claude's nephew and great grandson of Joseph Leflaive the founder, has taken over carrying on with the same family philosophy of respect for the great ''terroirs'', humility towards the forces of nature and rigorous in it's relentless pursuit of excellence in wine making.

We are pleased to be able to access to a few Ex-Domaine bottles from Domaine Leflaive, each bottle is tasted before bottling and recork if necessary, and they are bottled with yellow wax capsule to differentiate these treasurable bottles with the earlier released ones. Leflaive Bienvenues Batard Montrachet Grand Cru (Ex-Damaine) 1997
HK$12,500 per bottle
91pts Allen Meadows
Fresh white flower aromas trimmed in honeysuckle introduce sweet (in the best sense of the term), rich, round and complex flavors that deliver very good detail for the vintage and this is this youthful though no longer exactly young either. In this format, I would suggest holding it for another 2 to 3 years though in 750 ml, I would guess that it's drinking perfectly now.

Leflaive Batard Montrachet Grand Cru (Ex-Domaine) 2007
HK$11,500 per bottle
95pts Allen Meadows
This is also on the ripe side for a 2007 with an ultra elegant nose that is pure, airy and cool, indeed this is unusually elegant for the appellation with its white flower, citrus, pear, menthol, white pepper and light spice hints that are in perfect keeping with the rich, full and broad-shouldered flavors that possess the usual volume and power of a classic Bâtard but do not lose any of the precision or detail on the expansive, mouth coating and hugely long and very dry finish. Like a number of examples in 2007, this is an elegant yet forceful Bâtard.

Leflaive Batard Montrachet Grand Cru (Ex-Domaine) 2008
HK$11,500 per bottle
96pts Allen Meadows
Here the nose is notably tighter and more reserved with aromas of citrus blossom and zest, spice, smoke, fennel and hints of acacia that introduce big, muscular and wonderfully complex broad-scaled flavors that culminate in a long, focused and explosive finish of breathtaking length and intensity. This should reward at least a decade in the cellar and drink well for a similar period thereafter. This too is terrific and very Bâtard and like the Combettes, the '08 version is one of the very best young examples from Leflaive that I have ever seen.

Leflaive Batard Montrachet Grand Cru (Ex-Domaine) 2011
HK$10,800 per bottle
94pts Allen Meadows
There is just enough reduction present to warrant decanting this should you decide to try a bottle young though I would strongly advise allowing this at least 6 to 8 years of bottle age first as it would be a waste given how much potential this wine possesses. There is a wonderfully silky texture that adds interest to the tautly muscled and powerful big-bodied flavors that explode on the palate staining and notably dry finish. This is seriously impressive but like the 2012 version it's finer than it usually is.

Apart from the Ex-Domaine bottles, we are delighted to offer the below:

2007 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru
HK$9,000 per bottle

Pre-arrival Offer:
HK$8,600 per bottle
95pts Allen Meadows
A huge, almost overpowering Burgundy, the 2007 Bienvenues Bâtard-Montrachet possesses towering structure and imposing depth, with seemingly endless layers of texture that fill out its broad, ample frame. The flavors are naturally unevolved at this stage; instead what stands out is the wine’s explosive personality and overall intensity. This is a very strong showing from a wine that sometimes gets lost in the Leflaive range.
