Second Vintage by by Louis-Michel Liger-Belair: Pommard Clos de la Commaraine Monopole 2019

Originally owned by the Jaboulet-Vercherre family and marketed by Louis Jadot, Domaine de la Commaraine is one of the most aristocratic single estates of Burgundy since the 12th century when it was founded. It is now owned by Harvard Professor, Denise Dupré, and Mark Nunelly, former Managing Director of a Boston Capital investment fund, since 2017, who aims to revive the Clos de la Commaraine wine to its former glory and make it one of the best Premier Crus of Cote de Beaune. To achieve this, they made an agreement with Domaine Comte du Liger-Belair's winemaker, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair to be the consultant for the wine and the first vintage under his control was the 2018 which was also the first year of implementing biodynamic farming.

Clos de la Commaraine is a historic 3.75-ha monopole, premier cru-status vineyard, located on the north of Pommard. A true "Clos" with walls enclosing the monopole and the Chateau. In Jean-Francois Bazin's "Le Vin de Bourgogne" ("Wines of Burgundy"), he commented that Clos de la Commaraine is among the three vineyards that should be considered as Grand Cru vineyards. And for Louis-Michel Liger-Belair from one of the top Vosne-Romanee producers to be managing the production of this wine is an absolutely exhilarating news for any Burgundy lover out there.

The second vintage after Louis-Michel Liger-Belair took over the role, we could expect sufficient improvements of this extravagant monopole and this is worth paying attention to -

The 2019 Pommard Clos de la Commaraine comes from the 3.75ha monopole that was bought in 2017 by Harvard professor Denise Dupré and Mark Nunelly, MD of Boston Capital fund. The wine is overseen by none other than Louis-Michel Liger-Belair who apparently has free rein over its production. It offers surprisingly light redcurrant and strawberry fruit on the nose, then gains more depth with aeration, revealing earthy, loamy aromas that distinguish it as a Pommard. The palate is well balanced with bright redcurrant and wild strawberry fruit, silky smooth in style (maybe a sign of Liger-Belair’s touch) with a harmonious finish. I would like to see more Pommard character evolve on the palate, but I am intrigued to see how this will develop in bottle.
