A 97pts Blockbuster: Markus Molitor Graacher Himmelreich Spatburgunder 2014, "A beauty filled in bottles" Stephan Reinhardt

Markus Molitor is a leading wine estate in the Mosel region, best known for its classic Riesling wines. With the tradition of eight generations, Markus Molitor inherited the estate at the young age of 20 in 1984, who aimed to produce the best Mosel Rieslings under the name of “Molitor”, continuing their top quality which is terroir-specific, unmistakable and extremely age-worthy.

When their three Auslese Rieslings in vintage 2013 were scored 100-points ratings from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, the estate rapidly gain huge attention world-widely, which was even nicknamed “Herr 300 Punkte" (Mr 300 Points). Owning vineyards from 15 different sites in Mosel and Saar, Markus precisely selects what the vineyards offer each year, in order to present the uniqueness of each vintage, resulting in some vintage over 70 different wines.

The Monlitor also uses a special colour-coded packaging to identify the sweetness of their wines. When white capsules indicate dry wines, the green capsules present the off-dry, with the sweet and botrytis wines containing gold capsules.

Apart from the Riesling, Markus Molitor also produces red wines from spatburgunder, and the Graacher Himmelreich Spatburgunder is a very high-quality Pinot Noir which have been overlooked by many wine aficionados because of the excellent performance of the estate’s Riesling. We have been lucky to source a small parcel of Markus Molitor Graacher Himmelreich Spatburgunder 3*(3 Stars) 2014, Stephan Reinhardt from Wine Advocate described it is  so generous and elegant on the nose, where everything is just as it should be”, “Full-bodied, refined and voluptuous on the palate” and “I am still in love” after he tasted this three times. Stepping into its prime, we are delight to offer -

97pts Stephan Reinhardt Wine Advocate

The 2014 Pinot Noir Graacher Himmelreich *** opens with a deep, concentrated, very aromatic yet fine and superbly balanced bouquet of perfectly ripe, sweet forest berries and dark cherries intermixed with noble toast, very fine crunchy/flinty slate and wild herbal notes including coriander and potted ginger. There is a tiny touch of potted plums and fat nougat here as well, so the three-starred Himmelreich is perhaps the least reductive of Molitor's outstanding 2014 Pinot Noir series. (Molitor says the Graacher had a high pH of 0.1 or 0.15 compared the the Trarbacher.) However, this is so generous and elegant on the nose, where everything is just as it should be—a beauty filled in bottles. Full-bodied, refined and voluptuous on the palate, with perfectly ripe fruit and a tender, highly finessed and silky character, this is a dense, intense and incredibly juicy Pinot Noir with great intensity, very tine tannins and a seductive texture. The finish is long, concentrated, intensely aromatic and endlessly juicy, with hints of ripe blackberries, but at the same time, it is still pure, fresh and fine, with exciting tension thanks to the vibrating mineral structure and expression. Although I love the more transparent, silky/filigreed and delicate style of the Trarbacher Schlossberg at least as much, the Himmelreich delivers more flesh and fruit to the palate.. I tasted the wine three times in March 2018, and I am still in love.
