Easily recognisable for the heart on its label, the Calon Ségur's history goes as far as the Gallo-Roman era (50 BC-486 AD). Though wine production can be traced back to the 12th century, it was in the 18th century, with the Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, also owner of Latour, Lafite and Mouton, that the estate rose to fame. The heart on their label has been the symbol of Calon since then, thanks to the Marquis de Ségur who stated, “I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon”. The Marquis de Ségur - aka "Prince of Vines" due to his ownership of some of the most famous Bordeaux chateaus-including Château Lafite, Château Latour, Château Mouton and Château Calon-Ségur - was one of the most influential men in Bordeaux and his wines delighted Versailles and charmed all the courts of Europe. In the 19th century, the heart was engraved on the façade of the cellars with the words "Premier Cru de Saint-Estèphe" underlining the fact that the estate is one of the oldest in the commune. Saint-Estèphe in fact bore the name Saint-Estèphe de Calon, as if the Château’s and the village’s history were one and the same.
Their wines are known to have excellent quality as they are naturally blessed with a unique terroir unlike any other, and they are aged in new oak barrels for 20 months, and which the style is brought by a Cabernet Sauvignon which expresses its finesse and elegance in terms of the flavours, texture as well as excellent depth and length. They are also known for their extraordinary ability to age many years in bottle - vintages as old as 1947, 1953 and 1982 still display astonishing signs of youth.
